It is the second most populated city in the United States of America. Major corporations began their journey in Los Angeles. Global events are taking place here on a regular basis, and there should be someone to write about it. That is why the media in Los Angeles is likewise working at breakneck speed. Today we are going to cover a well-known publication, the Los Angeles Times newspaper. It is one of the country’s most popular and renowned newspapers, published daily. It has its own distinct history. Find out more information at losangeles1.one.

The origins of the LA Times

The Los Angeles Times first appeared in 1881. The publication’s debut issue was released on December 4, 1881. Nathan Cole and Thomas Gardiner were the initial directors of the newspaper. However, potential businessmen had no money to print a newspaper. As a result, the founders leased the newspaper to the Mirror Company, which published the Los Angeles Times. Harrison Gray Otis was appointed editor of the publication a year later.

Historians note that Harrison Gray Otis was responsible for the newspaper’s success since his editorial policy had a positive impact on the development of the Los Angeles Times. It should be mentioned that at the start of its operations, the publication actively promoted the interests of employers. Local trade unions were outraged by this viewpoint, and they even burned up the editorial office’s headquarters. This occurred in October 1910. As a result of this, 21 people died.

Change of management

Harrison Gray Otis passed away in 1917. The newspaper was managed by his son-in-law, Harry Chandler, who was in charge for 27 years. In 1944, the Los Angeles Times was sold to Norman Chandler (Harry’s son). Norman’s wife, Dorothy, was a social activist. She was involved in the establishment of the Music Center in Los Angeles, which bears her name.

Otis Chandler, who was the publication’s editor in 1960, wanted the Los Angeles Times to gain recognition. The new publisher considered that the newspaper’s major source of income should come from the news section. That is why he enlarged this department and even raised workers’ salaries. Following then, the family newspaper incorporated with The Washington Post.

Otis’ ideas produced the desired outcome. After all, the LA Times grew from a local newspaper to a global publication. In the 1960s, the Los Angeles Times received four Pulitzer Prizes. As of 2007, the publication already had 38 Prizes on its account. This is one of the most prestigious awards in the fields of literature, journalism, music and theater in the United States of America. It was initiated by journalist Joseph Pulitzer.

Present day. What happened to the newspaper?

At the beginning of the 21st century, the newspaper encountered difficulties. People stopped buying the Los Angeles Times in large quantities, and circulation began to decline. There are various reasons for this, including increased competition, the emergence of the internet, television, radio broadcasting and so on. Furthermore, the newspaper endured a personnel reduction, frequent changes of editors, salary cuts and bankruptcy.

In 2000, the Los Angeles Times was purchased by the Tribune Company.

This is the story of one of the most popular newspapers in the United States of America, which was founded more than a hundred years ago.

The Los Angeles Times has come a long way. Managers and editorial policies have continuously changed, as have the country and society. However, the newspaper is now widely read not only in Los Angeles but around the country.

We hope that our material was informative for you and that you learned more about your hometown.

Do you read the LA Times?
