Today we are going to talk about the prominent scientist Eugene Shoemaker, who made his hometown famous for his discoveries and painstaking work. Eugene’s parents were teachers. The boy was very bright as a child and had a talent for science. That’s why he graduated from school earlier than his peers, at the age of 15. When he was 19, he graduated from the California Institute of Technology.

At the age of 20, Shoemaker became a member of the U.S. Geological Survey. He began exploring uranium deposits in Utah and Colorado. Although Eugene was a geologist by profession, he was one of the founders of astrogeology. It should be noted that our compatriot dreamed of visiting the Moon. Unfortunately, his dream remained unrealized. Eugene had Addison’s disease, so he was not destined to be an astronaut.

However, Shoemaker continued to study the geology of the Moon for scientific support of the Apollo program. He and a team of researchers created a detailed map of the Moon. The geologist determined that the lunar surface could withstand not only the astronauts but also the lander. The scientist also participated in the preparation of astronauts for the flight to the Moon.

Eugene Shoemaker’s personal life and collaboration with his wife

When he was a student, Eugene met a girl named Carolyn. They got acquainted at the wedding of Carolyn’s brother in 1950. The couple married and had three children. While Eugene worked and was away on business trips, Carolyn raised the children and took care of the house. But later, she and her husband started working in the field of astronomy. The woman was attentive to details, which helped the Shoemakers work together.

In 1969, Eugene began to study the impact of collisions with asteroids on the formation of the surfaces of the Moon and Earth. During this period, Carolyn took an active role in helping the scientist. She studied the photographs of the Palomar Observatory. The couple used photography to look for asteroids approaching the Earth. The Shoemakers discovered the first comet in 1984. In total, the couple has discovered 32 comets and 800 asteroids.

In 1997, Eugene and Carolyn traveled to Australia to investigate local meteorite impact craters. It was the scientist’s last business trip. The couple’s car was involved in an accident. As a result of the accident, Eugene was killed, and Carolyn miraculously managed to survive.

Awards and recognition

Eugene Shoemaker received many awards during his lifetime: the Franklin Institute Medal, the American Astronomical Society’s Kuiper Prize, the National Medal of Science and more.

In 1997, the Shoemakers received the James Craig Watson Medal for discovering the largest number of astronomical objects. In addition, the American Astronomical Society awards grants in the Shoemaker name.

The most important thing is that Eugene Shoemaker did visit the Moon. Or rather, the capsule with his ashes did. Carolyn Porco, Eugene’s colleague and student, organized the delivery of the capsule and thus made the scientist’s dream come true.

Carolyn Shoemaker continued to work at the Palomar Observatory after her husband’s death. It is worth noting that the woman had a great sense of humor, open-minded and patient. Carolyn Shoemaker died in August 2021.

This is the story of scientist Eugene Shoemaker, who succeeded in instilling a love of astronomy in his wife.
