This metropolis impresses with its size, population, skyscrapers, shopping centers and so on. Today we are going to talk about the history of the Los Angeles Central Library, which not only fulfills its main functions but is also an architectural monument. Read more about this institution on losangeles1.one.

The founding of the institution’s history

In general, the history of the Richard J. Riordan Central Library dates back to 1872. However, the library did not have its own premises. Books “traveled” from one rented room to another. It was only in 1926 that the library opened its doors to readers.

The plan for the institution was created by the city librarian Everett Perry. It is clear that over the years there have been changes, and to this day only the children’s department has retained its original appearance. In the 20s of the last century, a reference room was located here.

As for the design of the building, it was created by the architect Bertram Goodhue. It should be noted that this was the architect’s last work because he died suddenly in 1924. So Carleton Winslow (Goodhue’s colleague) finished the project in 1926.

The central library was built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. It is also an example of the Art Deco style. Tourists are fascinated by the relief sculptures of various heights.

The future fate of the library

In the 60s of the last century, the library needed reconstruction and renovation. The premises were already outdated, and a large number of books and periodicals could not fit in the bookstores. For a decade, the city leaders could not decide what to do with the building. Eventually, they gave a local company the right to implement a reconstruction project. But in 1986, a fire broke out in the library. The fire destroyed about a million books and seriously damaged the building. The library was closed. A year later, an earthquake hit Los Angeles, further damaging the building.

It was only in 1993 that the Central Library was inaugurated. Readers enjoyed the beautiful interior, fresh renovations and quality literature.

Visitors can not just borrow books but also see unique art projects as well as take free tours of the building, Maguire Gardens.

Richard J. Riordan, the mayor in whose honor the library was named

Many tourists are interested in who the Los Angeles Central Library was named after. Richard Joseph Riordan was a politician, banker and mayor of Los Angeles who served for eight years from 1993 to 2001.

The future mayor of Los Angeles was born in Flushing, New York. In 1956, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in law. In 1993, for the first time in thirty years, a “Republican” was elected mayor. It was during Richard Riordan’s term that the Central Library was restored.

The Los Angeles Central Library is not just a reading room visited by locals from time to time. In addition to its main functions, the building is also an architectural monument. Guided tours and art projects are regularly organized here. You can come to the Central Library not only to read a book but also to stroll through the magnificent gardens that grow next to the building. Americans say that the Richard J. Riordan Central Library was reborn from the ashes. That’s true because neither fire nor earthquake destroyed this magnificent building from the face of Los Angeles.

We hope you found our material interesting and learned more about your hometown.
