He has spent his career studying the basic biology that triggers life-threatening diseases and implementing these ideas into medical innovations with global impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Soon-Shiong was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and earned his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1975. After working in tuberculosis clinics in East London, he left to pursue his training as a surgeon at the University of California, Los Angeles. There, he became an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Assistant Professor of Medicine. He was responsible for the development of the California NanoSystems Institute and was supported by NASA and NIST for developing next-generation biological materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his time at the University of California, he worked as the Executive Director of the UCLA Wireless Health Institute and as a professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics. He also held the position of a professor of bioengineering at the California NanoSystems Institute.
