The Thacher School is a private day and boarding school located in California. Founded in 1889 as an all-boys institution, it began admitting girls in 1977 and stands as California’s oldest boarding school, as well as the oldest private boarding school west of the Mississippi River. The school seamlessly blends a classical education with a signature horsemanship and outdoor program—a philosophy that has remained central to its identity since its founding. The Founding Story
Sherman Day Thacher founded the school after moving to the Casa de Piedra ranch in what was then Nordhoff in 1887. His father, Thomas Anthony Thacher, was a renowned professor at Yale University, which deeply influenced the institution’s academic standards.
The school’s origins trace back to a request from Professor Henry W. Farnam to prepare his son for Yale. Thacher agreed, on the condition that the boy would study in California. The curriculum merged rigorous academics with life in the great outdoors and horseback riding. At the time, tuition was just $14 a week, not including laundry service.
By 1900, the school had prepared 45 students for higher education. In its early decades, the institution earned recommendations from the presidents of elite universities, including Yale, Harvard, Stanford, and UC Berkeley.
In 1924, the school was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization. Following Sherman Day Thacher’s death in 1931, leadership passed to Morgan Barnes and later to the founder’s son, Anson Thacher. Anson led the school from 1936 to 1949 and remained a dedicated mathematics teacher until 1970.

The Campus
The campus evolved on the grounds of the original Casa de Piedra ranch. The architecture features a blend of California Craftsman and Spanish Colonial Revival styles. In 2019, the school’s historic buildings were officially added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Thacher School Historic District.
Bordering the Los Padres National Forest, the campus provides direct access to mountain trails. The school also maintains base camps in the Sespe Wilderness and the Golden Trout Wilderness in the Sierra Nevada for its educational and trekking programs. Facilities include modern academic buildings, a performing arts center, dormitories, a student center, an observatory, athletic fields, stables, pastures, riding arenas, a fitness center, and two dedicated student wellness centers.
Educational Programs
Horsemanship is a mandatory and fundamental part of the Thacher experience. The founder believed that caring for a horse builds character and a sense of responsibility. Freshmen are required to care for a horse and ride throughout all athletic seasons of their first year. Upperclassmen who join the school later must complete this requirement for at least one season.
The annual Gymkhana event allows students to showcase their riding skills. While Western-style riding is the standard, juniors and seniors are offered an elective in English-style riding.
The outdoor program includes weekend trips and week-long expeditions in the fall and spring. Students participate in rock climbing, cycling, sailing, canyoneering, backcountry skiing, and kayaking.

Teaching Methodology
Academics at Thacher are designed to meet the rigorous entrance requirements of top-tier universities. Students must complete four years of Mathematics and English; three years of Science, History, and Foreign Language; and two years of Fine Arts. Each semester, students choose five academically intensive courses with significant writing components. The school offers over 80 disciplines, ranging from Latin and Modern Middle Eastern History to Calculus, Astronomical Research, and Field Biology.
Instruction is based on the Harkness method, pioneered by Phillips Exeter Academy, which utilizes a discussion-based format around a round table. Students are active participants in daily preparation, analytical debate, and collaborative problem-solving. Every senior completes a “Senior Exhibition”—an independent research project that includes both a written thesis and an oral presentation to the entire school community.
Scientific Research
The school’s observatory was established in 1965 in collaboration with Caltech and UCLA as part of the Summer Science Program. In 2016, it was upgraded into a state-of-the-art research complex featuring a 0.7-meter PlaneWave CDK-700 telescope and a robotic dome. Students engage in real-world research alongside scientific teams from Harvard, Boston University, UC Santa Cruz, and the Las Cumbres Observatory.
In 2016, Business Insider named Thacher the most selective boarding school in the United States. For the 2024–2025 academic year, the school enrolled 225 students. Approximately 31% of the student body received financial aid, with an average grant of $64,993—covering roughly 83% of the cost of boarding tuition.
